Eastern Standard’s terrace looks like it’s straight off a classic Parisian boulevard. Well-tended flowers and shrubbery shield diners from the world beyond. A huge canopy covers the entire area. This was clearly meant to be and it is delightful, especially on a blistering summer’s day. But then the commanding cavernous interior recalls those grand brasseries in the city of light, too. Like any diner worth its working class salt, Watertown’s Deluxe Town Diner serves breakfast all day, every day, a regimen that no doubt originated to accommodate shift workers. Lunch is equally available throughout the opening hours, so, technically brunch is served seven days a week, all day and night. However, at weekends and holidays a special brunch menu is served throughout the morning and afternoon. Read the rest of this brunch »

Scollay Square is named for the infamous neighborhood in Boston’s old West End, where burlesque and gin joints ruled an unruly night. It was torn down years ago and replaced by the City Hall. This bar and restaurant is a few blocks away on Beacon Hill, right by the State House. Still it’s a low-key casual place, not an expense account watering hole for movers and shakers. The Sunday-only brunch includes a Make Your Own Bloody Mary Bar and standard dishes from oatmeal to lobster eggs benedict. Read the rest of this brunch »

It’s no wonder that the patio is scantily filled, even on a warm summer’s day. Well, there is the typical Boston humidity, which makes air conditioning very appealing. But, despite the sidewalk dining space being surrounded by colorful plants and views over pedestrianized Winthrop Street and Park, and some of the oldest buildings in Cambridge, which means the surroundings are very attractive, the interior of UpStairs on the Square is packed. The utterly pink Soiree Room upstairs has a wedding; the Zebra Room (the conservatory) has a big gaggle of girls celebrating something that’s cause to put on a nice frock; and the first floor Monday Club is almost full with more casual brunchers. Just 15 months old, AKA BISTRO sits in the sleepy, but ritzy town of Lincoln, a half-hour’s drive northwest of Boston. It’s a beautiful leafy area; Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius’ famous house is there, as is the DeCordova museum, filled with modern and postmodern art. Of course, it’s the area that Thoreau made world famous with his writings about a nearby patch he was living on at the time: Walden Pond. The restaurant follows Thoreau and Gropius’ ideals and embraces nature with an outdoor terrace fronted by a grassy lawn dotted with modern sculptures. The interior has a simple, warm brown color palette and an open plan kitchen — for some chef action! For the hearty of appetite, Miel, the self-dubbed “brasserie Provencale” in the InterContinental Hotel, has one of the best brunch deals around. Even for the moderate eater, it offers a rather fun twist on the usual hotel buffet brunch, because combines an all-you-can-eat buffet of breakfast items and cold meats and cheeses with an a la carte selection. The price includes whatever and however much you want from the buffet plus a choice of two menu items. Juice, coffee and tea are included, too. What’s it to be gorging or grazing, that is the question. Read the rest of this brunch »

This mini New England chain restaurant is a pleasant steak house, located a stone’s throw from Fenway Park. That means you can expect crowds on those Sunday afternoon ballgame days. If someone hadn’t already written a sitcom about a convivial Boston bar – hello Cheers – they might indeed be inspired to do so by Grendel’s Den.  This Harvard Square stalwart celebrated its 40th anniversary this year (2011) with a dinner party for regulars, past workers, and present employees. Then all and sundry danced the night away with anyone who cared to stop in. It’s a family owned restaurant that takes Harvard Square habitués new and old under its wing, giving them a safe home to gather and think, drink great beer (or wine and cocktails, but the craft beers are something else), and eat reasonably priced, good food. Chef and Owner Michael Schlow (Radius, Via Matta, Alta Strada) added Tico to his storied restaurant group, he joined the myriad of Boston’s top chefs to downscale his culinary aspirations for a simpler menu. In this case, Mexican inspired.

Still, Tico is no cantina; it’s a smart Back Bay restaurant and tequila-favoring watering hole with a brunch menu that boasts the perfect New York bagel and a mushroom and cheese omelet with black truffle salsa. Read the rest of this brunch »

Local 149 is located in the upcoming South Boston City Point neighborhood, just a few minutes walk from the beach at Castle Island and Fort Independence.

Set in the old Farragut House spot, it’s the younger sister restaurant to the Biltmore Bar & Grill in Newton and shares similar traits in its retro bric-a-brac laden décor and menu characteristics too, particularly owner Jason Byron Owens’ Southern roots in Tennessee.
